Woman misses wide right at NFL Combine

Lauren Silberman, a 28 year old female, tried out to be a kicker for the NFL on March 4th 2013. Lauren made history by being the first woman to attempt to play professional football. Many men see women as not being strong enough or being capable to playing this sport and consider females incapable to to take the pain and avoid injury that comes with this sport. I’m sure there is some superwoman in the world who can probably make the cut and play  in the NFL, but as far as Lauren Silberman goes, she did nothing but prove all the stereotypes about women being incapable to be play right.”During the tryout, Lauren kicked twice and in those two kicks she only managed to kick the ball for a total of 30 yards. After that she stopped because she apparently had a quad injury earlier in the week and she was in pain. One of Lauren’s former soccer teammates Katie Hnida commented, “Lauren was attempting to give women inspiration, but might have gave women a worse image and cause other females to be taken less seriously”.  Many also criticize Lauren because she couldn’t figure out how to get the ball on the tee without it falling, which any peewee football player could do. This does not sound like someone who supposedly has been practicing a long time for this moment.

This tryout was an absolute joke because before Lauren went to kick, she asked a couple of the other kickers how to approach the ball before kicking it. Some will say Lauren was brave and courageous for being the first to attempt to be a professional kicker while others will criticize her for her terrible performance. Lauren humiliating herself might mean two things, either women who are talented enough to play will step up and  keep trying out, or they will shy away and keep the same stereotypes.
